30 Day Horror Movie Challenge, day 17 - favorite 80’s horror.
The Hitcher. Because would you look at this scene. This building tension without any heavy-handed use of scoring to emphasize the creep factor, just the sound of the road and the rain and this dialogue and this directing and this lighting and Rutger Hauer’s flawless delivery. Stripped bare and understated. That line at the end of this scene. “Say ‘I want to die.’” It could so easily be just a threat, Jim clearly hears it as just a threat, but as delivered by Rutger Hauer it’s a confession, a prayer, it’s the closest thing to a look inside his head the audience will get throughout this film and it’s all we need because it’s all spelled out right there, in his delivery of that one line.

My tweet to C. Thomas Howell. I asked him what he thought about James Dean…I love his response.
